Predictions of surf height and location are a part of every weather report....oceans swells are monitored hundreds of miles away by ocean buoys and Hawaiians may plan around the forecasts. A few weeks ago one of the biggest surfing events took place on the North Shore..."The Eddie", in honor of legendary surfer and lifeguard Eddie Aikau. He was the ultimate Huge Wave Surfer and the tournament takes place only if the waves are HUGE. When given the word , surfers fly in from around the world...such was the case recently.
Kathy and I headed to the North Shore and hiked out to remote Kaena Point to take in the views of the wild Ocean. Later we stopped at the venue of the Eddie and imported a few shots of the surfing. Wave height we learned is measured from the back of the wave and they were said to be up to 60 feet high! Enjoy the mighty Pacific
The next day Kathy and I hiked down a cliff on the south coast to visit the Dragons Lair where ocean swell smash into lava tubes and roar up through the volcanic rock. The picture below shows the Dragons Nostrils...we are working on posting the video so you can see and hear the Dragons roar...stay tuned
